  • You Went Ahead of Me

You did it again! You went ahead of me. I thought I was a messenger, Sent to tell them about You.   But You had already come; Prepared hearts— Expectant, Hopeful.   He looked at me And said, I feel like I’ve met you before. Like I’ve known you a very long time.   As we read Your Words together, Spoke of mutual pain And the comfort You give, He remembered.   I felt this way in a dream once.   Silently awestruck— Weeping Tears of Joy, Listening as he described   How You came.   Dressed in white (Every story is the same!) You appeared, Laid Your hand upon the shoulder   Of a broken-hearted father.   Comfort Peace Healing Hope.   I woke… Read More

  • Scripture Basher

Then Job answered and said, “I have heard many such things; miserable comforters are you all.” Job 16:1-2 In your desire to comfort the broken-hearted, beware of becoming a Scripture basher. I sat rigid on the couch as my friend scolded me. “You’ve got to have faith. After all, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. God rewards the faithful. Without faith, we can’t please God.” Rushing to the bathroom, I lost my breakfast.  Pregnancy hormones still raged through my body, betraying me, as if they did not yet realize I no longer carried a little life inside. My still-swollen stomach now drooped in grief. I’d thought we were past the danger zone. Almost four months.  Now I… Read More

  • Delightful Messengers

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7 I thought my heart would burst with joy as I glimpsed our parents coming around the bend of the dusty African road. They are here!!!!  With them, they brought good news, comfort, and refreshment to our souls. Not to mention chocolate. We lived among a tribe in the bush of East Africa. We slept in a mud house, collected water from our tin roof, and read by lantern light at night. Beans and rice were regular fare. We hadn’t seen our family since we waved goodbye at the airport over a year… Read More

  • When Grief Comes

You who are my comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me. Jeremiah 8:18 I sit by the water, watching a leaf trickle through the air on its journey to the rippling surface. The sky is blue and the clouds’ edges are so sharp they look frazzled and irritated. The perfection of their silhouette against brilliant azure seems to frustrate them. They want to frizz out a bit and break the blissful facade. Kind of like my naturally curly hair I work so hard to straighten. The wind kicks her heels, threatening to upend my coffee cup as if she agrees to help. Two people sit nearby and make me mad. I want to be alone. I don’t want to hear another human voice. I… Read More

  • All My Tears

for Kate with love You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. Psalm 56:8 How fitting that I would unwrap this tiny vessel today. Many years ago, on another continent far from home, I made a sorrowful journey through grief after the loss of a much-anticipated baby girl. My friend Kate, upon returning from the small Mediterranean village of Hammamet, Tunisia, brought me this beautiful, delicate glass bottle. Attached to it she had written in her lovely, flowing script, You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. (Psalm 56:8) Today I found it tucked in… Read More

  • Made for Another World

For you have not yet come to the final stop and inheritance the Lord your God is giving you (Deuteronomy 12:9). “Mommy, I think lately God has been trying to tell me something.” Her big blue eyes stared deeply into mine. The air in the room, so still and quiet a moment before, quivered like a pool disturbed by a noiseless earth tremor.  “He is telling me that He is coming soon. Jesus is coming with lots of people to take us all up to heaven with him,” she continued, her face filled with glowing certainty. “And I just can’t wait to go. It will make me so happy.” I continued listening, my heart caught in my throat.  “I had a dream about it, you… Read More

  • Honor Revolution

Around the world, across borders and inside human hearts from every nation, a revolution is happening. People once suffocated by shame are taking their first gasping breath, eyes opening to a new life of honor instead of disgrace. Shame was never meant to be your portion, sings poet and artist Kristene Mueller DiMarco in her song titled Mercy. It was not part of the original plan for humanity, so lovingly created with intrinsic worth and value. Every man and every woman was created with immeasurable significance, designed to love and be loved. In the next chapter of humankind, the lies began and shame entered, robbing man and woman of their true identity. Your true identity and mine is cherished by God. Shame conceals the truth. Honor reveals… Read More
